History

Maybe there was a time when you attended church (possibly this church as a young person). Perhaps you can remember a time when you had a "faith" which meant something. Then you gradually drifted away and it has been some time since you attended a Church other than for a wedding or a funeral.
Now is the time to take a second look. The buildings are not cold anymore. The atmosphere isn't stern. The music isn't out of date, the chairs are not uncomfortable. The people are ordinary people just like you. But they do have a real faith which is making a difference in their day to day lives. They come on Sunday to enjoy meeting each other and their Saviour. They go away blessed and uplifted. They sing and laugh and most of all, they care for one another.
There has been a Baptist meeting in the village of Blackmore since 1828 and a church building since 1843. The original building was funded by Ashley Barrett who also built a caretakers cottage at the back of the church, the "Penny a Week" school plus a house for the schoolmaster and another house for the Pastor! In 1998 the Chapel was completely refurbished. The cottage has been incoporated into the present church building providing rooms, kitchen, toilets and an upstairs church office.
The first part of the refurbishment of the old "Penny a Week" school building was completed in April 2004. This beautiful hall is now in use for church and village events. On display inside is a Queen Victoria "bun penny" from 1843, the year that the building was erected. Phase two of the work adding a new kitchen and storage facilities was completed in January 2007.
In 2003/4 Blackmore Baptist Church was chosen as one of four Churches of the Year for the whole of the Eastern Association of Baptist Churches.
