Mark is the shortest of the four biographies of Jesus in the New Testament, but it is much more than a biography. It is a completely new kind of book. No one had ever written anything like it before - it is a Gospel.

Many books have been written about the great and the good, but what makes Mark's gospel unique is this: it is not written merely as a memoir of Jesus but to persuade us that he is the Son of God and that he summons people to follow him.

Mark is a gospel for today as it is fast-paced, action-packed and launches straight into the ministry of Jesus. Early church tradition states that Mark is the interpreter of Peter, and you certainly get the impression that you are listening to eye-witness preaching, as Peter's of course would have been.

And like any good preacher Mark (via Peter) keeps bringing us back to three important questions:

Who is Jesus? Why did he come? How should I respond?
