Prayer Journey Report |

Prayer for the Nation

Between January and March 2009, a representative from BBC conducted a prayer journey to the county towns of England to encourage churches throughout the country to commit themselves to regular prayer and intercession for our nation. We recognise that many Christians already intercede for the nation and the purpose of this initiative was to encourage the body of Christ as a whole to make this a priority.

The scripture that underpinned this prayer journey is 2 Chronicles 7:14 which reads (NIV): ‘if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.’ We believe that this word is for Great Britain now and are seeking to apply it.

The intention was to model each visit on this scripture in the expectation that if the body of Christ fulfils the conditions God has laid down then, in His grace, He will fulfil His promise and begin to heal our land. We recognise that many things are sadly not as they should be in our country and it seems clear to us that we need His help and that we should, as the Christian family in its widest sense, be bold enough to petition Him.

Letters seeking to arrange a mutually convenient time for each visit were sent to the deans and ministers of the most prominent Church of England church in each traditional county town. The list of 40 places of worship were split roughly 50/50 between cathedrals and parish churches. The programme of visits consisted of 7 regional round trips and began at Chelmsford Cathedral on Thursday January 15th 2009.
